Within a case handled by Lusk & Albertson, a factfinder has recently issued a report recommending a 10% across-the-board reduction in the teachers’ salary schedule for the 2010-11 school year. West Bloomfield Ed Ass’n and West Bloomfield School Dist, Case No. D09 I-0974. Adopting the School District’s salary reduction proposal, Factfinder Michael P. Long stated:
The proofs demonstrate that the District no longer has the financial ability to continue to provide the wage and benefit package to teachers as it has in the recent past. It has been shown that legally, and practically, the School District cannot continue its deficit operations.
The Factfinder rejected MEA claims that the revenue and expenditures contained within the School District’s budget were inaccurate, as he refused to recommend the salary schedule freeze proposed by the MEA, noting that such was insufficient to allow the School District to operate in a fiscally responsible manner. Post-factfinding negotiations are currently underway.
